MODEL FAQ

#1 HOW DO I APPLY TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THE 2017 CHARLESTON FASHION WEEK® (CFW) MODEL SEARCH?

There are three easy steps to apply:

  1. Submit your model application processing fee
  2. Read the FAQ thoroughly and check each box to show you understand each item
  3. Fill out the online application, which includes head shot and full body shot

#2 WHAT IS THE DEADLINE FOR SUBMITTING MY APPLICATION?

All models are required to submit an online application no later than Thursday, September 22, 2016, 12:00 p.m. EST. in order to secure an audition time at the casting call. Casting calls will take place at Embassy Suites Charleston – Historic Charleston, 337 Meeting Street, Charleston, SC, 29403, call time to be determined by CFW.

Applicants must submit a $15 application processing fee to apply. Please note, fee is non-refundable.

#3 WHAT IF I MISS THE DEADLINE TO APPLY ONLINE? AM I STILL ELIGIBLE TO ATTEND A CASTING CALL?

To secure an audition, models MUST submit an online application by the deadline outlined above.

Models that miss the online application deadline are welcome to attend the CFW open casting call. However, this does not guarantee you will be seen. Secured auditions are only guaranteed to models who submit an application online by the deadline listed above.

Models MUST come prepared! First they must meet the height requirement (see #5 for details), pay a $15 application processing fee, and complete the official CFW Model Search application, including model measurements. See application for a list of measurements that are required. Models that do not meet these requirements will not be seen by CFW.

TIP: We anticipate a high volume of models and highly recommend models submit an online application to secure an audition time.

#4 IF I AM SELECTED FOR A CASTING CALL, WHEN/HOW WILL I BE NOTIFIED?

All applicants will be notified via e-mail* by the week of the casting if selected to attend. The e-mail will include casting confirmation with date/time** and location. 

Child models (3 - 12 years old) will only be seen on Friday, September 30, 2016. Open casting child models must register by 1:00 p.m. EST to guarantee an audition.

Adult female and male models (13 years and older) will only be seen on Saturday, October 1 and Sunday, October 2, 2016. Open casting adult models must register by 10:00 a.m. EST on Saturday, October 1, to guarantee an audition.

*All CFW correspondence is done via e-mail. Be sure the email address on your application is correct otherwise you will NOT receive information from CFW. 

**Date and time for auditions are at the sole discretion of CFW and based on your casting selection on the application.

TIP: Mark your calendar in advance with the date you selected on the application to ensure your availability for a casting.

#5 WHAT QUALIFICATIONS MUST A MODEL POSSESS IN ORDER TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THE MODEL SEARCH?

A good attitude and a professional walk are imperative to a model's success. In addition:

  • Child models must be between ages of 3 and 12* years old and outgoing.
  • Female models must be 13* years of age or older and meet the minimum height requirement of 5’7” without heels. There are no exceptions.
  • Male models must be 13* years of age or older and meet the minimum height requirement of 5’10” without shoes. There are no exceptions.

*Models under the age of 18 must have parent or guardian permission to cast.  Parent/guardian MUST be present at registration to sign forms prior to audition.  No exceptions will be made.

Note: Height will be checked prior to each casting call.  Models under the required height will NOT be permitted to audition at the casting call and will be asked to leave. Please note, fee is nonrefundable.

#6 HOW DO I PREPARE FOR THE CASTING CALL?

All models are required to bring a copy of the e-mail outlining the casting call invitation including the date and registration time. In addition:

  • Wait time could be up to two hours. Bring something to read, a snack, and bottled water.
  • All models selected at the casting call will have a professional headshot and full-body shots photographed for the CFW 2017 model book. Be prepared for this PRIOR to registration. Meaning bring a brush and touch-up makeup for photography if cast for model book.
  • Practice your walk and interview skills! There were more than 800 applications in 2016 and only 250 models were cast.

#7 WHAT DO I WEAR TO THE CASTING CALL?

All models are required to be groomed. In addition:

  • Child models must wear a white top and black bottoms, with a clean, fresh face and hair.
  • Female models MUST wear a fitted solid black tank top, black legging or fitted black shorts, and bring heels a minimum of 3” in height. Do not wear loose clothing or shoes that do not fit. There are no exceptions*.
  • Male models MUST wear a fitted solid black tank top, black pants or black shorts, and closed toed dress shoes. Do not wear loose clothing or shoes that do not fit. There are no exceptions*.

*No graphics or logos permitted on tank tops. Models will NOT be seen if they do not adhere to the outlined casting attire. No exceptions.

NOTE: Women will NOT be seen without heels and layers of clothing will NOT be allowed in the audition room. Also, all models selected at the casting call will have a head shot and full body shot photographed for the 2016 CFW model book at this time. BE PREPARED for this prior to registration.

#8 IF SELECTED FOR THE 2017 CHARLESTON FASHION WEEK® RUNWAY OR SPECIAL EVENT MODEL BOOK, WHEN/HOW WILL I BE CHOSEN TO TO PARTICIPATE?

Models 13 years and older that attended a CFW 2017 casting will be notified via email by Monday, October 17, if selected to be in the official Runway or Special Event model book. Child models will be notified by January 13th.

Models selected for the official CFW Runway or Special Event model book are NOT guaranteed participation at the event. The 2017 CFW Runway model book will be presented to all Featured and Emerging Designers, as well as boutiques for initial selection. Models selected for this book may have the opportunity to walk in a runway show(s). Final selections are at the sole discretion of CFW and based on production and need. Models will be notified of a second casting and/or fitting via e-mail no later than February 2017, final selections will be made by CFW in March 2017. Models, parents and/or agents may NOT contact the designers or boutiques directly. In doing so, a model may be pulled from the show(s). 

The 2017 CFW Special Event model book will be presented based on events scheduled before and during the week of CFW, including both boutique and sponsor specific events. Models selected for this book may have the opportunity to model for a presentation, trunk show, or other special event, but not a runway show. Models will be notified of a second casting and/or fitting via e-mail closer to the event date. Final selections are at the sole discretion of CFW and based on production and need.

#9 IF I AM NOT SELECTED AT MY AUDITION FOR EITHER THE 2017 CHARLESTON FASHION WEEK® RUNWAY OR SPECIAL EVENT MODEL BOOKS, MAY I ATTEND THE OPEN CASTING CALL?

Yes. Models not selected for either the Runway or Special Event model book at their original audition are permitted to attend the open casting for another chance. Only serious models will be considered.

#10 IF SELECTED FOR THE 2017 CHARLESTON FASHION WEEK® RUNWAY OR SPECIAL EVENT MODEL BOOK, WHAT IS THE TIME COMMITMENT?

Runway models are required to attend all rehearsals, designer and boutique castings and fittings, as well as week of the event if selected to walk in a runway show.

The week of Charleston Fashion Week®, Tuesday March 14 – Saturday, March 18, 2017, Runway models are required to be at the tents as early as 3:00 p.m. for evening runway presentations. 

Special Event models are required to attend workshops and participate in those special event(s) selected for. Mark your calendars for:

  • Workshop 1: Saturday, December 10, 2016
  • Workshop 2: Saturday, January 21, 2017
  • Workshop 3: Saturday, February 25, 2017
  • Workshop 4: Monday, March 13, 2017

All workshops are mandatory and exact location and timing to be determined at CFW’s sole discretion. Special event(s) dates and times will be determined closer to the event.

#11 WHERE ARE THE CFW RUNWAY MODEL REHEARSALS HELD, AND WHAT ARE THE DATES AND TIMES?

All rehearsals will take place in Charleston, South Carolina. Exact location and time-block information will be sent to models via e-mail at a later date. Time-blocks are assigned by and at the sole discretion of CFW. Mark your calendar NOW for the following:

  • Rehearsal 1: Saturday, December 10, 2016
  • Rehearsal 2: Saturday, January 21, 2017
  • Rehearsal 3: Saturday, February 25, 2017
  • Rehearsal 4: Monday, March 13, 2017

#12 WHO SELECTS MODELS FOR THE CFW RUNWAY SHOWS AND SPECIAL EVENTS, AND WHAT IS THE PROCESS?

The 2017 CFW Runway and Special Event model books will be presented to all Emerging Designers, boutiques, and Featured Designers for initial selection. Final selections are at the sole discretion of CFW and based on production and need. Here are more details for each:

  • If selected, Runway models see Emerging Designer(s) for a casting(s)/fitting(s) Saturday, January 21 – Sunday, January 22, 2017, the same weekend as the second mandatory model rehearsal. (Exact date and time are at CFW and designer’s discretion. Location will be determined at a later date). Final fittings for Runway models for an Emerging Designer show(s) will take place as early as 8:00 a.m. to as late as 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 12 – Monday, March 13, 2017.
  • If selected, Runway models are required to attend an in-store fitting(s) for a boutique between February 13 – 22, 2017. Final day/time at the sole discretion of the boutique. Runway models cast for more than one show are required to attend each fitting. Final fittings will take place as needed and managed by CFW pending the overall production schedule.
  • If selected, Runway models see a Featured Designer(s) for a casting(s)/fitting(s) beginning Sunday, March 12 – Saturday, March 18, 2017. Exact date and time are at CFW's sole discretion. Location will be determined at a later date.
  • If selected, Special Event models are required to attend casting(s)/fitting(s) as requested by the boutique or designer. Exact date and time are at CFW's sole discretion. Location will be determined at a later date.

TIP: Mark your calendar in advance with the rehearsal and fitting dates above to ensure you are available.

#13 WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE MODEL SEARCH AND THE COMPETITION?

The CFW Model Search is open to all applicants that apply for a casting call as outlined above; either Runway or Special Event models. The Rock the Runway Model Competition™ was added to the event in 2010 to further support and showcase a community of up-and-coming model talent. The Competition is only open to Runway models booked by a CFW designer or retail participant for a CFW runway show. Special Event models are not eligible for the Competition. 

#14 HOW ARE MODELS SELECTED TO COMPETE IN THE ROCK THE RUNWAY MODEL COMPETITION™?

Models booked for a runway show will be eligible for the Competition. However, this does not guarantee a model will advance as a finalist. Selection for the Competition is based on industry criteria by a model panel of experts. See the About the Competition page for industry criteria specifics.

#15 IF SELECTED AS THE GRAND PRIZE WINNER, WHAT DOES THE PRIZE PACKAGE INCLUDE?

One (1) female and one (1) male Grand Prize Winner will be selected by the panel of Rock the Runway Model Competition™ judges. Package includes:

  • $1,000 cash prize
  • Mentoring opportunity with industry leader, Karen Lee Grybowski, international model scout, and/or other(s)
  • Professional hi-quality composite cards
  • Beauty gift bag

Additional prizes may be announced at a later date.

#16 DURING WHAT TIME FRAME MUST THE WINNER REDEEM HIS/HER PRIZE?

Beauty gift bags will be given on Friday evening after the Grand Prize Winners are announced. Grand Prize Winners will be promoted on the CFW website following the announcement. Cash prizes will be mailed to each winner by June 1, 2017. Composite cards must be completed with the designated CFW photographer by September 15, 2017, exact timing & location of the shoot at the photographer's discretion.

#17 ARE MODELS SELECTED TO PARTICIPATE AT CHARLESTON FASHION WEEK® PAID OR COMPENSATED?

For Charleston Fashion Week® 2017, Runway models will be paid a small stipend for each show they are selected to walk in, but does not include the MUSC charity event. Special Event models will be paid a small stipend for each event they are selected to participate in. More information will be provided to the model once he/she has been selected. In addition, all participating Runway and Special Event models will be given a gift bag valued at more than $500. Please refer to the Mission and Prizes page in the model section of the website for details on this as well.

#18 IS THERE A FINANCIAL OBLIGATION TO PARTICIPATE AS A MODEL? IF SO, WHAT WILL MY MONETARY COMMITMENT BE?

Charleston Fashion Week® requires a processing fee of $15 to apply. Runway and Special Event models are also responsible for any and all costs associated with castings, rehearsals, fittings, and the week of the event including all transportation to/from Charleston, meals, lodging, and parking fees.

#19 IF SELECTED TO MODEL IN A RUNWAY SHOW(S), OR MODEL FOR A SPECIAL EVENT, WILL TRAVEL TO/FROM CHARLESTON AND ACCOMMODATIONS IN CHARLESTON BE PROVIDED?

If you are based outside the Charleston, South Carolina area, you are responsible for your travel to/from Charleston and lodging the week of CFW. Visit the CFW website for hotel partners that may offer a preferred rate*. It is the model’s responsibility to book a hotel room or make alternative arrangements.

*Preferred rates are at the sole discretion of the hotel, NOT Charleston Fashion Week®.

#20 HOW MANY PEOPLE ATTEND CHARLESTON FASHION WEEK® EACH YEAR?

More than 8,100 people attended Charleston Fashion Week® 2016, including buyers, store owners, model scouts and agents, photographers and fashion industry professionals. Charleston Fashion Week® attracts local, regional, and national press attention.

#21 WHAT PRESS COVERAGE DOES CHARLESTON FASHION WEEK® TYPICALLY RECEIVE?

Charleston Fashion Week® 2016 generated more than 331 million media impressions through the activation and support of local and national media to include reporters, bloggers, photographers, editors, and journalists.  Past press highlights have included event coverage by CNN, Huffington Post, InStyle.com, Glamour.com, Southern Living, The Daily Front Row, The Post & Courier, Style.com, etc.  More than 150 credentialed media are onsite to cover and report the events of the week.

#22 WHAT SUCCESSES HAVE PAST MODELS HAD POST CHARLESTON FASHION WEEK®?

Several models that graced the Charleston Fashion Week® (CFW) runway have signed with the country’s top agencies, modeled for national and international fashion designers, and successfully competed on television shows like America’s Next Top Model. 

Since 2015, more than 30 participating CFW models have signed with top modeling agencies such as Directions USA, ELITE DIRECT, ELITE NYC, and Wilhelmina Miami. 

Christina Zapolski is an all American model best known for her work in FitnessSouthern LivingGlamour Mexico, and Self magazine, among others.  She is signed with Wilhelmina Models in New York and Los Angeles, and most recently shot 2017 campaigns for St. Regis Resort, Kate McDonald Bridal, and Fila Tennis.  She has also worked with top fashion houses including Chloe, Max Mara, Chanel, and national retailers Target, Bloomingdales, Macy's, and Kleinfeld Bridal, to name a few. 

Since her debut on the CFW runway in 2015, top model Shinhae Yoon has gone on to walk in both NYFW FW 16' and Seoul Fashion Week FW 16', and been featured by VOGUE Italia, VOGUE.comDazed.com and The Face Magazine. 

Ryan Bogdan, male model winner of the Charleston Fashion Week® 2015 Rock the Runway Competition™ signed with Wilhelmina Miami. Immediately following CFW, he moved to Miami to develop his portfolio, and has since auditioned for upcoming campaigns including both Nike and Sears.  

CFW 2015 Rock the Runway Competition™ female model winner, Sarah Louise Rhodes also signed with Wilhelmina Miami immediately following CFW, and has since signed with Directions USA, Wilhelmina Chicago, and most recently Vision LA.  She has spent the past year working in Chicago, Los Angeles and the Carolinas with companies including Belk, Sears, Kate McDonald Bridal, and LulaKate.   

Winner of the Charleston Fashion Week® 2012 Rock the Runway Competition™, Samuel Roberts, relocated to New York City to pursue modeling full time. Samuel is signed with Fusion Models NYC and has been placed with I LOVE Models Management in Milan. He has walked the runway for Louis Vuitton, Hermes, Paul Smith, and Wooyoungmi during Fashion Weeks in Milan, Paris, and New York.

#23 AS A MODEL FOR CHARLESTON FASHION WEEK® WILL I RECEIVE A TICKET TO THE EVENT?

No. Tickets must be purchased at charlestonfashionweek.com in November 2016.

#24 ARE THERE ANY ADDITIONAL INCENTIVES FOR BEING A MODEL AT CFW?

All models selected to participate in a 2017 Charleston Fashion Week® runway show or special event will receive the following:

  • The opportunity to be discovered by top scouts and national agents from New York to Miami, Atlanta to Chicago and everywhere in between 
  • Visibility to local and national fashion industry leaders
  • Gift bag valued at more than $500
  • Recognition on the CFW 2017 website
