Lives: New York, NY
Resume: Founded in 2014 by Tanya Sheikh & Ivan Gilkes, In Support Of is a retail concept with the goal of bringing inspiring talent to the forefront while supporting causes considered important. Their brick and mortar shop located in the Meatpacking District of NYC, features clothing and other items that are unique, detail oriented, well constructed; objects that are both wearable and innovative.
Tanya Sheikh grew up in a small town in Massachusetts and attended Providence College on an art scholarship. While at Providence, she was given the opportunity to teach at-risk youth and was inspired to bring her love of fashion and nonprofit work together. Sheikh held the College's inaugural student-run fashion show, making all of the clothes herself and produced the show with the assistance of the at-risk youth to which she taught. By merging both fashion and nonprofit work together, Sheikh found her passion and calling. After moving to Brooklyn, she began her career as the womenswear buyer at a local boutique and then went on to be the showroom manager for OAK in NYC. In 2009, she opened her own showroom representing young designers, and in 2014, she expanded upon her showroom and partnered with Ivan Gilkes to open In Support Of boutique in order to showcase young talent and to support local nonprofit work. Ivan Gilkes grew up in Southern California with an interest in art and design. After completing studies at NYU with a focus on architectural history, middle eastern studies and studio art, Gilkes found himself moving into the world of fashion and sales. He gained experience at NARS Cosmetics and then working as an assistant to an international buying scout before partnering with Tanya Sheikh to open In Support Of. Gilkes is most passionate about independent talent and helping designers discover and refine their voice.
